The Golden Compass

You would have seen either the preview or TV ads promoting this movie, which is opening on Boxing Day. On the surface it looks very similar to movies like Narnia and The Lord of the Rings. But The Golden Compass could be quite dangerous, especially since it's being blatantly marketed at impressionable young children.

The movie is based on the first book (The Golden Compass) from the His Dark Materials trilogy, written for children by outspoken atheist Philip Pullman. The books are strongly against Christianity and especially the God of the Bible. At the end of the trilogy, the main character and her companions kill God (the tyrant) and decide for themselves how to live.

There are some good Christian reviews/articles about this movie and the trilogy. Listed here are just some that you may find helpful.

Yes, I borrowed the first book from the library and read it. It is pretty clearly anti-Christian, including a tirade right at the end about the Bible and how stupid it is. (The deamon thing was just a cute concept, though, and not really occult, since the world of the story is completely different from ours.) However, I think the movie has watered down these aspects. From my research, though, the underlying anti-Christian themes are still very much a part of the movie.

I certainly have no desire to see the movie, since it sounds like it's not even a terribly good movie, as such.

(BTW, the book, while OK, reads like a sloppy attempt to write an atheist's version of the Chronicles of Narnia, which is not surprising because that's exactly what the author intended to write. Well, except the sloppy bit.)

I went and sore the movie with some of my friends who are are christian as well. The only things we could see that where anti-christian where that whese cuite little aniamls who up too a age of the child change shape are called demons.
Also that the authority is very bad and look like the cathlic church.
There where some cool sence in the movie like the pollar bears fighting ( too grusim for a child to watch ) and having a pollar bar has a friend.
All I can say is see the movie yourself and make up your own mind but see it when it comes to DVD or too the libary.
